Slow Cooker Cabbage, Sausage and Potatoes

Slow Cooker Cabbage, Sausage and Potatoes
Great for a cold day or night. Easy delicious comfort food.
INGREDIENTS
1½ lbs potatoes, quartered
2 packages kielbasa, smoked sausage, unsmoked- sliced
1 small head of cabbage (or 6 cups)- chopped
4 cups stock (chicken, vegetable or ham)
Salt and pepper to taste
1 Bay Leaf
Pssst….I did sprinkle a little brown sugar in there 😉 (& I’ve made my brown sugar w/white & molasses when I was out).
My daughter adds carrots & loves it, not on list; Flexible recipe for sure… like the onion seen in didn’t even add potatoes this time 😉🍸it’s optional 😆
And
I layered, starting with potatoes & onion
INSTRUCTIONS
Place all the ingredients in a 6 quart slow cooker
Cook on low for 6-8 hours
And I’ve upped the amount of sausage. I’ve even left out potatoes 😁 that much liquid isn’t necessary either; my daughter 🙄 loves that part!
#GOYA seasonings are great!

  1. Would it be good with celery in it? I’m not much of a cook so I’m never sure what can be added or not.

    • If you like celery it would. I’ve not seen that done before. And a couple of my family members don’t like celery but it wouldn’t mess it up. ♡

  2. Hmm, I have left over bone in ham…..will try doing it with ham, bone for split pea soup! You forgot to mention onion in original recipe..I’m going to put in just half of one for lpflavor

  3. I cut and brown my kielbasa first. I also use beer instead of broth. Adds so much more flavor using both these tips!

    • Yes…a good thing about this is how flexible it is. I do not like the taste of beer but my family would like that a lot. I had same opinion about browning kielbasa or sausage first too. However 😀 my daughter requested I don’t (we don’t know the whys with that one, lol) with a firm “No…I dont think so”. Oh why did I ask?! It’s a good thing I have a sense of humor with me.
Anyway, thanks for sharing tips, they’re good one ♡

    • We simply like the sweetness & flavor. But that is completely optional & like MANY recipes (other than baking), it’s really flexible and forgiving. It does good with changes to personal preferences; for instance…my daughter likes carrots in it but I could do without them. I do add them for her, lol, besides…they’re healthy,♡

    • Oh I’m sorry. I love Better Than Bouillon! Obviously. It only takes a little. I just use a teaspoon that we eat with, not measuring kind. I use one little scoop. All of their flavors are really good. Like if I am out & i can only buy one, this last time k got vegetable base bcuz it’s packed with flavor yet can go in more options…I used it for my gravy and stock from Turkey at thanksgiving. Chicken is probably the most popular tbough. I “try” to keep at least 4 though; chicken, beef, ham & vegetable. They do last a long time  😉 ➺ 💓 😆🍴♨

  7. I am making this in my slower cooker right now. Probably added more onion and potatoes than called for, and did add minced garlic, salt and pepper. Browned two packs of kielbasa cut about 1-12″ rounds. Cubed 1/2 of large head of cabbage (I would have used more, but my cooker was full after I added the sausage! I used 4 cups of chicken stock. Oh My … it smells DELISH already! Can’t wait for dinner! Super easy and YUMMY! Thanks so much for sharing this recipe with all of us!

  9. Thank you Dawn, I’m cooking this right now, but…I added two Bay Leafs and didn’t notice the time so I’m cooking on High for 4 hours. I’m sure it will be fine, I’ll tune in later for a after taste 🙂

  10. I am making this today but cheaped out and went with a bag of O’brien hashbrown potatoes .. those obviously won’t need to be in all day like raw pototatoes, does anyone have a suggestion how late in the process i should add the bag of frozen O’briens .. an hour or maybe even two before the end? Thank you 😀

    • Aah 😀 good eye. Truth is, my family likes that sausage so much we had to add more. 2 ‘should’ be enough but if any of your family is like mine (big meat eaters) add more. This dish is so variable, go with your preferences…you can’t mess it up.

  11. You said you layer starting with potatoes and onion but you don’t list onion in the ingredients. How much onion?

      • 1.Whole onion for me.
2.Pork shanks also work wonders together with the smoked sausage.
        3. Do mine in the electric pressure cooker in 60min.
